Full Description
Bren gun pillbox. On the sea front at St. Mary's Bay. (1) A Second World War pillbox previously noted from documentary sources is visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as a structure on the seafront at St Marys Bay. This feature was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the South East RCZAS NMP project. The pillbox is centred at TR 0927 2767, and measures approximately eight metres SSW to NNE and four metres WNW to ESE. It is located roughly 48m to the SSW of another Second World War pillbox (Monument Number 1535448). It is not certain from the aerial photographs which pillbox the documentary record cited here refers to. However, as this pillbox is a non-standard shape, it is thought this may be the Bren gun pillbox. By the time of the vertical aerial photograph of 1983; the pillbox had been removed (2-3).
