Monument record MWX51433 - A banked polygonal partial enclosure, Lydd Ranges
Summary
A banked polygonal partial enclosure which may have formed an early Twentieth Century firing range or other military training site is visible on vertical aerial photographs of 1940. This is within the perimeter of the Lydd Ranges, which is still in use for military training today. The ground of the area surrounding the possible firing range has a pock-marked appearance thought to be caused by the impact of shelling or gunfire. The interpretation as a military training site is also based on the fact that maps of 1907 and 1909 have recorded multiple gun targets and splinter-proof shelters on Denge Marsh just to the west. The latest available vertical aerial photographs of 2007 show that the bank of the enclosure and the mass of small craters are still visible as extant earthworks. These features have been mapped from aerial photographs as part of the South East RCZAS NMP project.
