Full Description

A large Second World War bomb crater is visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as a circular hollow with a banked rim, in the recreation ground at Dunkirk End. This feature has been mapped from aerial photographs as part of the South East RCZAS NMP project. The bomb crater is centred at TR 0966 2924, and measures approximately nine metres in diameter. It has a two-metre-wide banked rim around the edge of the perfectly circular crater. It is thought this may be a result of upcast soil from the explosion. Vertical aerial photographs of 2006 show that this area is still in use as a recreation ground, and the bomb crater is no longer visible (1-2).
