An extensive area of Second World War aircraft obstructions are visible as linear alignment of poles across Burmarsh between Palmarsh, Hythe (TR 1333 3355) and Haguelands Farm, Dymchurch (TR 1002 3037) on historical aerial photographs taken in 1941 and 1942. The poles are arranged in different patterns, towards haguelands Farm, they form conjoined polygons, and towards Palmarsh they form straight linears and small 17m squares. The purpose of the different arrangements was to break up large flat fields defined by ditches; the ditches themselves would also have acted as aircraft obstructions. It is probable that the anti landing poles would have been more extensive than is visible on the available aerial photographs. The aircraft obstructions that were visible have been mapped as part of the South East Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment NMP. (1-4)
