Summary

The site of Folkestone West coastal battery, an emergency battery built during the Second World War as part of Eastern Command's coastal defences. The battery mounted two 6-inch ex-naval guns by September 1940. It is referenced as being armed until September 1944 and was manned by 339 Battery of 550 Coast Regiment. The coastal battery is visible as buildings and an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1941, though the structures appear to have been demolished and the site levelled on aerial photographs taken in 1959. The site comprises two gun emplacements, a probable magazine, two further buildings and a pillbox or observation post. This site has been mapped from aerial photographs as part of the South East Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey NMP (Component 2).

Full Description

Folkestone West coastal battery located at TR 235 363. This was an emergency battery built during the Second World War as part of Eastern Command's coastal defences. The battery mounted two 6-inch ex-naval guns by September 1940. It is referenced as being armed until September 1944. It was manned by 339 Battery of 550 Coast Regiment. No. 1 gun emplacement was located at TR 2345 3615 and No. 2 gun at TR 2350 3620. The depression rangefinder was positioned at TR 2350 3630. (1) Aerial photography from 1982 shows that the battery has been removed and the site is occupied by housing and a seafront area. (2) The coastal battery is visible as buildings and an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1941, though the structures appear to have been demolished and the site levelled on aerial photographs taken in 1959. The site comprises two gun emplacements, a probable magazine, two further buildings and a pillbox or observation post. The gun emplacements are centred on TR 2350 3624 and TR 2348 3621 and are set into a scarp, with the observation post on the seaward side, At TR 2353 3627 (3-5).
