Full Description

Three possible Second World War bomb craters are visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as earthworks between Lade and Lydd Airport. These features were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the South East RCZAS NMP project. The group of three bomb craters is centred at TR 0746 2103, and is visible across an area measuring approximately 364m east to west and 200m north to south. The individual craters are located and sized as follows: TR 0728 2108, 17m in diameter; TR 0763 2110, 13m in diameter; TR 0742 2091, 13m in diameter. All three possible bomb craters have a small banked rim around the edge. It is thought this may be a result of the loose shingle characteristic of the ground in this area, which would have been upcast by the explosion. All three craters are visible as earthworks on vertical aerial photographs of 1946. They are still clearly visible in this form on vertical aerial photographs of 1962. By the time of the photographs of 2007; it appears the hollows, if they still exist, have been colonised by scrubby undergrowth, thereby masking them from view (1-3).
