Monument record TR 15 NW 625 - Late Roman Burials, North Lane Car Park
Summary
In 1996 excavation of the North Road car park site reaveled evidence of the two Roman roads, one on top of the other, running north-west to south-west. Five later Roman , 4th century?, inhumations (TR 15 NW 625) were found adjancent to the road in a discrete group. The individuals were buried close together, possibly all at the same or similar time, as a group with two definitely interred together. The later burials were of a probable adult female and a child of seven or eight) The burials were contemporary with the later road (two sealed by the road metalling) all buried supine, extended, with the right arm laid down the side and the left arm over the abdominal or pelvic area. There was no evidence for coffins or shrouds and in keeping with the suggested period no buiral goods. The palaeopathology report suggested that they had lived a harsh life style displaying evidence of back, elbow and ankle strain. In addition the double grave suggested that acute disease lead to deaths in rapid succession.
