Full Description
Model stable block originally built between 1635-38 for Broome Park (TR 24 NW 7) . Of two storeys in red brick, tending towards English Bond, with tiled roof and modillion eaves cornice. Six windows, casements with small leaded panes, those on the ground floor having 3 lights with stone mullions and cambered head linings. Shaped Dutch gable ends. The east range, of one storey, formerly the coach house, was probably added in the 19th century it is more utilitarian than its predecessor.
The main 17th century entrance, although blocked by modern fabric, remains. The east edge of the north elevation of the original stable appears at first to return normally with the adjoining 19th century stables abutting from the rear. Surprisingly the straight joint at the intersection of the buildings stops over two metres above the exisitng ground level. Seventeenth century brickwork appears to continue at this height beyond the rear elevation of the primary stable block. Behind this fabric, from within the later 19th century structure, the scar of a roof line can be seem. A single storey range its eaves-plate located atop the low wall extending from the rear of the 17th century building undoubtedly adjoined the rear of the stables. Whether this range was contemporary or perhaps a later structure that took advantage of an existing wall encloseing the stable yard is not clear.(1 - 2).
