Monument record TQ 76 NE 265 - Subterranean passages, probable world war trenches, former Civil Service Sports Ground, Gillingham

Summary

Subterranean passages unearthed during a watching brief by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at the Former Civil Service Sports ground, Gillingham. As the site was once part of a vast World War I camp, these passages are most likely practise trenches. Military occupation of the camp contined through World War II and a defensive trench was dug at the top of Darland Banks (north of the site). The camp was abandoned after World War II and only the entrances or collapsed areas of the trenches were filled-in.
