Site of cement works erected by George Smeed in the mid 1850s with a number of bottle kilns. The works were leased to Webster and Co. (also of Burham Brick Lime and Cement Co.) from 1869 to 1884. The original bottle kilns were replaced in 1884 with intermittent kilns in banks of three. In 1900 a bank of chamber kilns was built using Smeed Dean bricks and labour. The works passed to the Red Triangle group in the 1920s, and were re-equipped with two Smidth rotary kilns between 1926 and 1928. The works passed to APCM in 1931 and operated until the 1960s.
Chalk was supplied from the Highsted quarries as a liquid slurry via cast iron pipes.
The works were demolished in 1970.
