Full Description

Site of a barge yard opened in 1843 by George Smeed to construct all the barges and other craft to supply his works with raw materials (ash from London, Coal from the North East) and to take his products, bricks, cement and flints, to market. All told some 79 vessels were constructed here from Thames Barges to large schooners.
There was a covered building slip, steam chest, and a forge nearby to supply iron work to the barge yard and for other uses on the Smeed Dean estate.
The buildings are marked but not labelled on the 1st to 4th O.S. maps. There is information on the barges in R Perks, "George Bargebrick".
