This former public house was designed in the later 1930s and bulding commenced in 1939. Construction was interrupted by the Second World War and it was therefore only completed in 1945. The Upper Red Lion is an example of the house style of the in-house architects of the Canterbury brewery, Thompson and Wotton, who specialised in public houses designed in the local vernacular or classical style. An air-raid shelter in ‘the cellars beneath the new premises at the … Red Lion, Herne’ was made available to the public around the start of October 1940 (1). These were presumably reinforced with strutting.
