Full Description

This is a brick-shuttered Type 24 pillbox at Bekesbourne, on the east side of a lane to Shepherds Close. This was one of three pillboxes in Bekesbourne which, falling well to the south of the Dover, Canterbury, Whitstable Stop Line, and facing outwards form Bekebourne Airfield (in this case south-west), may, at least in part, have been intended as defences for Bekesbourne Airfield, Ickham. It was pillbox No.100 in the 1940 list of pillboxes in East Kent (2 December); it was in Sector 3 of the area, at the stated Military Grid reference R 642728. It features, as ‘Pill box near Shepherds Close’ in a list of defence works at Bekesbourne to be cleared in 1945; this was evidently never carried out, since the pillbox survives.
