Full Description
The Second World War roadblock on the Inner Perimeter of the Canterbury Fortress at Lady Wooton’s Green is among the best known of Canterbury’s roadblocks, perhaps because the contrast with its picturesque setting made for interesting photographs; later on, further photographs were taken recording the extensive destruction wrought by air-raids in this area. The roadblock extended across both carriageways, continued by rows of concrete pimples across the intervening lawn lawn. Rows of cylinders stood ready down each side of the roadblock which could be fixed into concrete-lined sockets in the road. There was a machine-gun emplacement (possibly in the Canterbury Cathedral postern) well placed to cover this road block.
