Full Description
From the report: "Upper Mill, East Malling, was an extensive paper-making complex which developed during the late 18th and 19th centuries around the site of an old, probably corn, watermill…The greater part of the complex was demolished in the mid-twentieth century and the site was subsequently used as a council depot. The only buildings retained from the mill complex were a two-storey brick building (probably a rag-house); a two-storey tile-hung building at the site entrance (which probably provided offices and/or accommodation); the remains of water management features including an elevated millpond, tail-race, and bypass channel; and a small fragment of the main mill building including the remains of an overshot waterwheel. The latter structure..was probably kept because it retained the millpond. The Upper Mill site has recently undergone redevelopment for housing. Happily the fragment of mill building and the mill pond have once again been preserved, albeit somewhat altered in character."(1)
