Full Description

The site of an engineering works and foundry originally operated by W and H Spencelagh who advertised themselves as 'ironmongers, iron and brass founders, engineers and millwrights, machinists ans smiths, lathe and tool makers, coppersmiths and gas engineers'. The firm was taken over in the early 1880s by Taylor and Neate who concentrated on grinding mills, slurry pumps and barge gear. The works occupied buildings behind the Tartar frigate public house and were described in 1888 as a collection of 'numerous wooden buildings adjoining Cook's wharf'.
