Monument record TR 15 NE 247 - Chapter House St Augustine's Abbey
Summary
Chapter house at St Augustine's Abbey built or at least finished by Abbot Hugh de Fleury (1108-1126). This was a large rectangular building measuring approximately 87 feet by 33 feet internally and had clasping buttresses on the east and a bench around the inside of the walls. These features were probably added in 1324-32 when the chapter house was rebuilt. It was rebuilt again in 1382-6 after an earthquake. Eight abbots are known to have been buried here including Hugh de Fleury. After excavation it was covered with soil and the area used as a playing field.
