Findspot record TR 35 SW 44 - Mesolithic site, Finglesham

Summary

A Mesolithic site, first discovered in Spring 1981 during excavations for the foundations of a new cow shed. Finds included over 1700 stuck flints and large amounts of burnt flint, in a largely undisturbed deposit above the natural brickearth. The site is low-lying, about 3m above OD, being situated just above the level of the Ham Fen marshes and on the north side it runs under marshland peat for an unknown distance. "Finds have included at least eight major axe fragments and 32 axe-sharpening flakes, but no microliths. The large number of axe-sharpening flakes is particularly worthy of note and overall the site most probably represents some sort of axe-manufacturing area".
