Abstract/Summary

This report provides information on the archaeological and historical significance of the site of Ingress Abbey and the Empire Paper Mills at Greenhithe. The western half of the site was occupied by the house and gardens (with its ornamental follies and features) of the 19th century Ingress Abbey and the modern buildings of a Merchant Navy College. The eastern half, was occupied by the derelict buildings of the Empire Paper Mills. The site contained a number of Grade 2 Listed Buildings and structures, while the Empire Paper Mills were designated an Area of Archaeological Potential, due to their industrial significance.
