Title Benenden School, Kent, Proposed All-Weather Sports Pitch, NGR TQ 8044 3387, Report on an Archaeological Evaluation
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2015

Abstract/Summary

The proposal requires that the sloping ground of the pitch area and its immediate surrounds will involve a cut-and-fill process whereby the higher ground levels on the south-east side of the pitch will be reduced, and the lower levels to the north-west will be built up. Other ground impacts will include the new pavilion, access road, and other facilities. The evaluation failed to locate significant archaeological remains of Roman date, and only a low level of past activity on the new sports pitch site. Trench 6 contained the only substantial concentration of archaeological remains. These are interpreted as 17th or 18th-century landscaping/garden features. Trench 6 and the area around it thus appears to provide the only element of archaeological sensitivity and significance within the development site.
