Abstract/Summary
The report provides a summary of the archaeological evaluation and test pits carried out between the 13th and 22nd of July 2015. The report documents its findings and conclusions from the work carried out.
From the report: "Wessex Archaeology was commissioned to carry out an archaeological trial trench and Palaeolithic test pit evaluation on Land at Powder Mill Lane, Darenth, Kent… field work was undertaken between the 13th and 22nd of July 2015…Within..twelve trenches a geo-archaeological test pit was excavated in order to assess the Palaeolithic potential of the Site. Within trench 10 two extra test pits were excavated in order to map the gravel deposits as the terrain covered by this trench descended steeply into a river valley. These test pits confirmed that the feather edge of river terrace deposits, which follows the approximate edge of the former gravel quarry, survives at the base of land that rises to the north east of the site. The slope was capped by deposits of chalky coombe rock that sealed the edge of the terrace deposits. No Palaeolithic artefacts were recovered; a small number of derived flint flakes are almost certainly of Neolithic or Bronze Age date. Within the evaluation trenches a single north west/south east orientated field boundary ditch 603 was identified and recorded, however no dating evidence was recovered from within this feature. No other finds or archaeological features were identified within the evaluation trenches.
…This evaluation, along with a previously undertaken Palaeolithic desk-based assessment and archaeological desk based assessment forms part of an archaeological assessment of the Site, which is aimed at providing archaeological information to aid the planning process. The proposed development includes new housing, access road, amenity space, gardens and parking."
