Abstract/Summary
The report details the watching brief conducted at St Anthony's School, Margate, between 24th February and 5th March by Canterbury Archaeological Trust Ltd.
From the report: "Summary: Following evaluation trenching which exposed a single undated gully, a watching-brief conducted at St Anthony’s School, Margate (NGR 637250 170175, centred) revealed a pit and a section of a second gully. Neither feature produced any dating evidence. Amongst the finds recovered, a small copper-alloy ear-scoop of Roman or late Iron Age date, is of particular interest, although it cannot be directly related to any of the recorded features." …" In total, twenty-five foundation pits were cut (labelled A to Z; omitting O), although eleven of these were not observed by an attending archaeologist. The pits ranged in size from 2.6 x 2.2m to 1 x 1m. Six of the pits were of the smaller size. Twenty-four of the pits were excavated to a depth of 1.10m. The remaining pit was excavated to a depth close to 1.35m." … "A small collection of finds was recovered from the recorded deposits during the monitoring process…Six prehistoric struck flints (133g) with no obvious working, presumed to be of Neolithic – Bronze Age date. Also, five moderately sized fragments of calcined (burnt) flint (156g). Of special interest was a stray find in the form of a small copper-alloy ear-scoop of Roman or late Iron Age date…All the finds are residual, none being found within the features. The presence of the Roman ear-scoop does suggest that other features may be present somewhere in the immediate in the area, unaffected by the present groundworks or outside of the current development."
