Abstract/Summary
From the report: "Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by English Heritage to undertake initial diving investigations on a number of sites on the Goodwin Sands as part of the Contract for Archaeological Services in Relation to the Protection of Wrecks Act (1973). These sites had been identified by various means, including geophysical surveys during 2008, 2009 and 2010. Based on these previous investigations, a list of sites of interest was drawn up and initial dives were conducted on a number of these targets in order to ascertain their archaeological potential.
Diving operations took place during two diving sessions on the Goodwin Sands from 15th to 22nd May and from 20th to 29th June 2011. A total of 12 sites were dived. One site, GAD 23, was subjected to full assessment against the non-statutory criteria for designation; further details of this wreck can be found in the individual Undesignated Site Assessment Report.
An additional two days of fieldwork involving a walkover survey was carried out on the 28th and 29th September 2011. The purpose of the survey was to further record the inshore sites of GAD 106-109, which had been dived previously but had the potential to be exposed during spring low tides. During this survey an additional three sites were located inshore of GAD 106-109. Following the fieldwork phase of this project, a list of known sites on the Goodwin Sands and the Downs that have been subjected to archaeological investigation was compiled. Data from
previous Wessex Archaeology investigations and surveys by other individuals and organisations were integrated into this assessment, to provide further information on the known archaeological resource in this area and to assist with the planning of further fieldwork.
This report constitutes an overview of work carried out on sites in the Goodwin Sands and the Downs during the 2011 fieldwork season and recommendations are made regarding further work with relation to individual sites and the area as a whole as part of an Historic Area
Assessment."
