Abstract/Summary
Watching brief conducted on site adjacent to the White Coliffs Visitor Cntre in advance of installation of new services. The site was previously occupied by a prison (1885), which was converted to barracks (1901) and demolished in 1924-25. The archaeological watching brief was maintained during machine and hand-dug excavation of all the service trenches relating to the new development. Where foundation walls relating to the former prison/barracks buildings (Plate I) were exposed, hand excavation and cleaning by the attending archaeologist was carried out and subsequently the exposed walls were photographed and recorded both in section and plan.
