Abstract/Summary
In 1836, the Tithe Commutation Act was passed, which provided for the commutation of
tithe payments in kind to money payments, known as tithe rent charges or corn rents,
based on the national price of certain quantities of grain over a seven year period.The 1836 Tithe Act produced two main records: the tithe map and its accompanying apportionment.
