Abstract/Summary
Archaeological Evaluation at Land south of Island Road, Westbere prior to the erection of a building for use as a motor salesroom, servicing and workshop. Previous evidence of an archaeological potential include, Roman road allignment, Roman cremation and inhumations cemeteries. Also aerial photography has indicated the presence of a rural settlement.Total of 527m of machine dug trenches in a regular pattern of 4 linear west-east transects, represented approx. 4.2% of the total 21000sqm. Every trench revealed archaeological features. The finds consisted mostly of pottery, dating from the Iron Age and Roman periods. There was a single burial, it was an inhumation and was badly preserved, likely to date from late Roman period.
