Description

TQ 67 SE SHORNE FORGE LANE 2/138 27.8.52 Little St Katharine's (formerly listed as 1 to 3 St Katharine's Cottages) II* C15. Timber-framed in oak with close studding infilled with C19 roughcast. C19 tiled roof. Wealden type hall house comprising central hall (later divided into 2 storeys) with north and south bays jettied at front, north bay jettying intact, but south bay has been underbuilt. Both bays have curved braces to ground and first floors. Curved eaves overhang to hall supported on 2 curved braces and bracket springing from the main post of the hall. Inspected in the 1890's by architect Robert Weir Schultz for the owner George M Arnold FSA, who stripped the house of later work in order to make measured drawings of the timber frame. Described as "a typical specimen of a yeoman's house of the 15th or early 16th centuries". (Arch Cant Vol 27 pp 193-200). Listing NGR: TQ6925171459
