Full Description
A 18th century stone lined cess tank was uncovered druing test pitting in the St James area of Dover. This tank cut an underlying sand deposit which possibly represents a beach ridge. The tank was square, it was lined on the south and west sides with large, roughly shaped blocks of greensand (up to 0.3m across), set in a hard cream gritty mortar. The pit was about 1.1m deep and was filled with deposits of soft dark organic loam containing large greensand blocks (collapsed superstructure). The filling was subdivided into an upper and a lower deposit, both of which yeilded pottery, glass and clay tobacco popes of eighteenth-century date and they clearly represent dumps of domestic refuge.
