Full Description

Part of a large carefully dressed stone window surround, measuring c. 34 by 27 by 16cm, was recovered during test pitting in the St James area of Dover. This apparently represents a portion of a chamfered sill with the base for a rounded side jamb. The stone is of a cream-white oolitic limestone with adhering mortar that is light grey with frequent small chalk and coal grits. Such a mix is typical of the late 18th to early 19th century. The fragment clearly comes from a substantial masonry building. Both the stone used and the adhering mortar implies a post medieval rather than Medieval date for the piece. Very close to the findspot, there formerly stood, on the north-western side of St, James’s Street, St. James’s National School, built in 1848 and closed in 1927. Early photographs show this as being a flint built structure with dressed stone corners, windows and doors, in a neo-gothic style. This is perhaps the most likely structure from which the present architectural fragment may derive. (taken from source)(1)
