Monument record TQ 57 SW 1098 - 1st Century AD Romano-British Enclosure Ditch and Pits, Temple Hill, Dartford

Summary

During the stripping and excavation of the site ahead of proposed development in 2016, the north east corner of a large Roman enclosure ditch and pits were revealed. The large enclosure ditch was dated to the Early Roman period, with a later ditch adjoining to the east added by c. 100AD. The purpose of these features is unclear. Roman pits to the north of the enclosure seemed to contain domestic rubbish, and some may have been open since the Late Iron Age.

Full Description

During strip, map and sample investigation ahead of potential development of the site in January 2016, excavation revealed c.11m length of ditch aligned North-South, turning West for a further 14m, constituting the North East corner of an enclosure.
The Northern ditch terminates to form an entrance at least 10m wide, and a terminus on the Eastern ditch possibly indicates a second entrance of at least 2.5m wide. The enclosure ditch had an average width of 1.97m and depth of 1.04m, with a steep V-shaped profile. The fill was mid-dark brown silty, sandy gravel.
The inner side of the Eastern portion of the enclosure ditch was truncated for 6.50m by a narrower gully, which then turned East to form a possible later enclosure added by 100 AD. This gully had a broad V-shaped profile, with an average width of 1.35m and depth of 0.35m. The fill was mid-dark brown silty, sandy gravel. Pottery from both the large enclosure ditch and this gully represented EMIA, LIA and Roman pottery up to 120 AD.
A further gully ran parallel to the North side of the first, also truncating the Eartern portion of the large ditched enclosure. Its length was at least 5m with an average width of 0.30m, depth of 0.25m and a U-shaped profile. The fill was mixed orange-brown and black silty, sandy gravel.
Eleven pits in the vicinity were dated to the Early-Mid Roman period, though some may have been open from the LIA.
These yielded several assemblages of pottery and CBM dated between 43-70/80AD. An assemblage of 14 sherds included one sherd each of North Kent Fineware, Hoo St Werbergh fabric and South Gaulish Samian (this one stamped OFLICINI, thereby dated 35-65AD). A second pit produced an assemblage of 27 sherds including South Gaulish Samian ware, and a fragement of a white-slipped beige flagon. A further pit produced an assemblage of pottery including a sherd from an Eggshell Terra Nigra biconical beaker, 70-100AD, as well as two rim fragments from a tentatively identified poppyhead beaker (70-130AD). A final pit produced a single sherd of shell-tempered jar of Monaghan Class 3F4 (70-140AD). (1)
