Full Description

An Iron Age enclosure was first seen in aerial photographs (in particular 2008) covering an area c. 150 north-south by 130 m east-west. From c. 2005 onwards it was excavated by the Lenham Archaeological Society following a resistivity survey.

In 2007 or 2008 the Lenham Archaeological Societry excavated a trench across the north-east corner (tr 1.007). The trench was 1 m x 9m in size. 45 cm below the surface sherds of late Iron Age and Roman pottery were found as well as iron slag. The pottery was particularly common inside the enclosure. Two sets of post holes were also found that suggested a palisade to the excavators. The ditch was 170 cm below modern ground level and had a flat bottom. A coin of Severus Alexander (AD 222) was found at 120 cm depth. Late iron age sherds were found throughout the fill and included a piece of rouletted ware (poss mid 1st century BC).

A second trench was excavated acorss the western 'gate' following a resistivity survey. The 2 m x 7 m trench encountered a large area of iron slag 25 cm below the surface. On the northern side of the 'gate' was a semi-circule of sandstone pieces which may have been posthole packing. Some pieces of fine wheel-thrown pottery were also found which were believed to date the ditch to c. 50 BC. An almost complete late Iron Age pot was found on the southern side of the trench. (1)
