Full Description
During an archaeological watching brief undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at The Grand Shaft Barracks in 2017 a shallow open gutter formed of laid granite setts was uncovered. This was traced for around 3 metres to the edge of the adjacent terrace cut, where it presumably discharged onto the bank. Any excess water could have been collected by the open gutter located at a lower level on the Gymnasium terrace. This gutter is clearly shown on the 1903 plan and seems to have taken rainwater off the roof via a centrally positioned downpipe. Using the stone-lined gutter as a reference point, the 2017 excavated trench would seem to have passed through the central part of the building, which is recorded as serving as the machine gun shed.(1)
