Full Description
During an archaeological watching brief undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at The Grand Shaft Barracks in 2017 a brick lined culvert was uncovered on the north western side of the Soldiers Quarters Range B of the Grand Shaft Barracks, Western Heights. The culvert ran along the outside (north-west side) of rear wall foundation 217 and appeared to be contemporary with it and belonged to the first (of at least three) phases of construction. This probably took waste water away from the unseen Field Officers’ Quarters, Range A. Although collapsed and damaged, from what survived of the base it would seem that the culvert had been circular in cross-section, with an internal diameter of about 0.30m. A very similar drain culvert was located in a corresponding position at the rear of Soldiers’ Quarters A. (summarised from report) (1).
