Full Description

During an archaeological watching brief undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at The Grand Shaft Barracks in 2017 a number of wall foundations were uncovered representing a later annexe to the Soldiers Quarters Range B of the Grand Shaft Barracks. This annexe appears to have been added early in the C20th and was located to the North-west of the rear wall of the main range, set at a slightly higher level, related to the annexe added onto the rear ablutions/cookhouse block. Set into a substantial terrace cut these walls formed the south-west and north-west sides of a larger building, extending away to the north-east, which was provided with an internal concrete floor. A flight of external concrete steps occurred along the south-western side of the complex demonstrating that this wall marked the end of the present structure. In detail, the south western wall was 4.60m in length, 0.39m thick and survived to a height of 1.15m. It was built from red and yellow bricks set in a pale yellow-grey sandy mortar, with cement render on its north-eastern (internal) face. Standing to the same height, a second wall joined the first at a right angle and appeared to be contemporary with it. The wall was again 0.39m thick and of similar construction to the adjoining one. It was set into a 0.80m deep terrace cut back into the sloping hillside. (summarised from report) (1).
