Full Description
During an archaeological watching brief undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at The Grand Shaft Barracks in 2017 a brick drain culvert associated with the Soldiers’ Quarters Range A was uncovered. This culvert ran along the outside of the north western external wall foundation 1410 and was clearly contemporary with it. Although damaged, it was ascertained that the culvert had been circular in cross-section, with an internal diameter of about 0.28m. The base of the drain lay at about 1.65m below present ground level. Both the size, construction and positioning of this culvert is very similar to one located at the rear of Soldiers’ Quarters B. (summarised from report) (1).
