Full Description

During an archaeological watching brief undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at The Grand Shaft Barracks in 2017 wall foundations relating to the former site of the Armourer's and Tailors Shops on the south western side of the site, was uncovered. Cut back into the slope, two contemporary walls formed the eastern corner of a room with an internal concrete floor. Best preserved was the north eastern, which survived to a height of 0.72m above floor level (11 courses). It was 0.48m wide and constructed from dense orange-red unfrogged bricks and occasional shallow frogged yellow bricks set in a dark grey gritty mortar with frequent chalk/lime and charcoal grits/specks. Most of the yellow bricks were employed in the outside (i.e. north-east) face of the wall. The internal face showed traces of cement render and two added shallows piers or buttresses. Another wall joined the first at a right angle and was clearly of the same date, being of identical construction. It was not well preserved and had been demolished down to internal floor level. As surviving, it was 0.48m wide and 0.23m high (3 courses). It had been cut into the natural slope, with a distinct drop in level on its south-east side. (summarised from report) (1)
