Full Description
During an archaeological watching brief undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust at The Grand Shaft Barracks in 2017 a wall foundation relating to the former site of a cook house located at the south western side of the barracks complex. The northern foundation, representing the northern external wall of the building, was aligned north-east by south-west, and was set into a shallow construction trench. It was 0.45m wide and survived to a minimum depth of 0.28m. It was built from orange-red unfrogged bricks set in a dark grey gritty mortar with frequent chalk/lime and charcoal grits/specks, very similar to that used in other walls within the vicinity, which clearly implies that it is of the same date. Another wall running parrallel to the first was also located and represents the southern external wall of the wash house. It was traced for a minimum distance of 1.25m and was 0.36m and stood to a height of 0.15m. It was constructed using frogged yellow/maroon bricks set in a pale yellowish grey sandy mortar, with traces of internal cement render on the north western face. This mortar type would place the wall within building Phase 2 or 3, rather than with the primary work of 1805. (summarised from report) (1)
