Full Description

Summarised from report:

During an archaeological excavation undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in the St James area of Dover the remains of a Medieval building were uncovered flanking the south western side of the former Arthurs Place. This appears to have been abandoned and was subsequently replaced in the later medieval period/early post medieval period by an open yard area containing a number of rubbish dumps. The building would have been large and constructed of timber set on a platform of chalk rubble and provided with rammed chalk floors which butted hard against the south western edge of the road. This building was probably later thirteenth century in date and appeared to be the last of a series of such structures that had once stood on this spot. There was no clear evidence for any outer walls and the full extent of the building was not revealed. From the extent of the floors, it would seem that the structure had been at least 5.50m in width (NE–SW) and more than 7.00m in length (NW–SE), set long-side on to the road, with no significant gap between the two. Within the building, above the primary floor surfaces, a complex sequence of localised floor patches and repairs were associated with several hearths, interleaved with ashy occupation layers, (Plate III). All of this implies regular, long term use of the structure. (1)
