Full Description
Summarised from report:
During an Archaeological Excavation undertaken on land directly to the south-west of Russell Street, Dover, as part of the St. James area redevelopment, a number of early medieval features were uncovered. The earliest archaeological remains identified in the excavation consisted of multiple intercutting pits. These were identified predominantly within the western half of the excavation area but their full nature and extent was not determined due to the limits of the excavation. The largest pit, observed in three slots, measured approximately 4m wide and up to 2m deep. The full profile was not revealed but it contained abundant chalk rubble sealed by a silty gravel upper fill. This upper fill contained several sherds of grey, thick rimmed pottery provisionally dated to the Norman period. (1)
