Full Description
Summarised from report:
During an archaeological excavation undertaken on land immediately to the west of Russell Street, Dover, as part of the St. James area redevelopment, a sequence of medieval deposits representing a building of at least two distinct phases and an associated yard were uncovered. The remains uncovered included a complex sequence of chalk foundations, clay floors and occupation deposits which appeared to relate to a simple building containing at least two rooms, bounded on the north-western side by at least one beam slot aligned north-east to south-west. The complete outline of the building was not exposed, and it continued to the north-east, beyond the limit of excavation. It seems probable that it originally fronted onto the line of early Russell Street/Fox Passage. To the west of the building a layer of gravel appeared to represent an external yard. Abundant red staining on this indicated potential evidence for metal (iron) working. Domestic refuse, in the form of marine shell, fish bone, animal bone, tile and pottery had been deposited across this external area. Occupation within the building is provisionally dated to the twelfth century AD and had apparently come to an abrupt end with a catastrophic fire, when the timber ground beam was burnt in situ and sealed by a burnt charcoal deposit up to 0.05m thick. The central part of Building 1 had subsequently been rebuilt and showed evidence for at least four distinct phases of occupation and floor deposits within it. A new rammed chalk floor was laid and previous walls were replaced by new chalk block and flint foundations, which probably supported a timber superstructure. The building again perhaps fronted onto early Russell Street/Fox Passage. Provisional dating of the pottery retrieved from Building 2 suggest that it was in use during the late twelfth to thirteenth century AD.(1)
