Monument record TR 15 NE 1783 - Roman metalled surface, pits and post-holes, Staplegate

Summary

From 2012-2015 a series of excavations at Staplegate, Canterbury revealed Roman deposits probably associated with a nearby masonry structure. These included a possible timber building, follwed by a metalled surface, possibly part of a courtyard, and a number of pits and post-holes. Finds dated this phase to no earlier than AD 130 and included a brooch, pottery, tile and animal bone. A second phase of use consisted of pits and post-holes associated with domestic waste and a third phase saw periodic dumping of waste.
