Full Description

Archaeological evaluation, excavation and watching brief from 1999-2001 found evidence of post-medieval garden features among earlier remains. A number of ditches and shallow trenches associated with late 19th or 20th century gardens were found.(1)

A 4th - 5th century Greek vase (thought to have been an ornament in the main house) was excavated at the site. The vase is described as an "almost complete small vase (lekythos) of Greek red figure ware depicting a striding male(?) figure in tunic, complete save for rim and handle (of which a trace survives), heavily burnt on one side, surviving height 130 mm, surviving weight 140 g, probably fourth or fifth century BC" (from the report, 2). It is hypothesised that the vase was broken and thrown out during the mid 20th century. (2)
