Findspot record TR 34 NE 395 - Prehistoric worked flint, Nelson Park Road, St Margaret's-at-Cliffe

Summary

A thin layer of clay sealed the natural chalk. This layer produced a limited amount of prehistoric flintwork and is perhaps most likely to represent down-washed material accumulated in the bottom of the valley. The small flint assemblage recovered forms part of a more extensive lithic scatter known to exist in the area.

Full Description

A thin layer of clay sealed the natural chalk. This layer produced a limited amount of prehistoric flintwork and is perhaps most likely to represent down-washed material accumulated in the bottom of the valley. The small flint assemblage recovered forms part of a more extensive lithic
scatter known to exist in the area.

"A total of thirty-one prehistoric struck flint flakes (504g) was recovered during the evaluation
trenching, of which nine appeared to be worked." The assemblage includes a number of mainly secondary flakes, two blades and two piercers. Most are thought to be Neolithic to Bronze Age, but one flake is likely Palaeolithic. (1)
