Full Description
850+ artefacts were discovered including a total of 8 Late Roman coins .One coin was a Magnentius of TRS minting, dating to 350 -351 AD. Among the 8 were several minims, identified by coin expert David Holman as "Fallen Horsemen". Another metal tip was discovered in the pit adjacent to one of the 2007 pit, which had produced a similar bit socketed iron tip possibly from the same instrument. Pieces of large roof tile and classic hypocaust pieces indicate a large Roman building nearby. A large assemblage of pottery sherds and pot rims of many shades and styles were recovered including beautiful Oxfordshire ware pot rims. Fragments of Mortaria were found and additional pieces of white mortaria along with a piece of bronze spoon were donated by a metal detectorist who found them 50' from the other side of Hedgegap. A 12 cm iron needle and numerous other ferrous metal pieces and large nails were found. By far the highest number of artefacts from the lower layer were bones of animals. (1)
