Monument record TR 35 NW 905 - Post-medieval land drainage ditch, Cow Leas Meadow, Sandwich
Summary
In Trench 3 the old marsh surface was cut by a broad ditch, which must be associated with the former marshland drainage system. This ditch was aligned north-east to south-west and perhaps originally drained into the Town Ditch a short distance away. The datable material recovered from the old marsh surface here, which includes a decorated clay pipe bowl suggests that the ditch was not dug much before the early nineteenth century. It does not appear on large-scale later nineteenth-century maps of the area, however, suggesting that it may have been backfilled by then.
