Findspot record TR 35 NW 906 - Finds from the top layer of alluvium, Cow Leas Meadow, Sandwich

Summary

One of the earliest and most important finds recovered from the site at Cow Leas Meadow was a cut farthing of William I of Scotland, dated c.1205 – c.1214, which came from Trench 2, just above the natural marsh clay. Overall, the amount of medieval material recovered was quite small, with no indication that town rubbish had been regularly dumped in the vicinity.

Full Description

One of the earliest and most important finds recovered from the site at Cow Leas Meadow was a cut farthing of William I of Scotland, dated c.1205 – c.1214, which came from Trench 2, just above the natural marsh clay. Overall, the amount of medieval material recovered was quite small, with no indication that town rubbish had been regularly dumped in the vicinity.

Other finds included a 19th century token, a late medieval or early post-medieval iron horseshoe, a late eighteenth- or nineteenth-century clay pipe bowl, thirteenth- to seventeenth-century pottery, peg tile, two glazed floor files and animal bone. (1)
