Summary

The majority of post-medieval activity largely comprised the levelling up of the area. Metalled surfaces and a well associated with properties fronting the High Street were noted in test-pits 4 and 2 respectively. Foundations representing remnants of a nineteenth- or early twentieth-century structure were identified, to which pit 112 and well 207 were probably associated.

Full Description

The majority of post-medieval activity largely comprised the levelling up of the area. Metalled
surfaces and a well associated with properties fronting the High Street were noted in test-pits 4
and 2 respectively. Foundations representing remnants of a nineteenth- or early twentieth-century structure were identified, to which pit 112 and well 207 were probably associated.

While a small number of highly abraded sherds of late thirteenth- to fourteenth-century pottery
were recovered from layer 119, they appeared to be residual. Additional finds suggest that the sequence was of sixteenth-to early eighteenth-century date.

A small assemblage of finds was recovered during the evaluation, with most from test-pit 1.
The assemblage was dominated by post-medieval pottery with the small number of medieval
sherds highly abraded and recovered from a post-medieval context. A single, heavily worn
piece of ceramic building material may be of Roman origin, but again it was recovered from a
post-medieval context. The remaining finds consisted of CBM, fragmented glass, clay tobacco
pipe and two iron nails. All are considered to be late post-medieval or modern.(1)
