Full Description
Within a deposit taken from the sondage in Trench 1 were two short lengths of preserved timber which appeared to be the remains of logs or stakes stripped of their bark. At the base of the sondage the circular ends of a number of preserved stakes of 2-3cm diameter were revealed in an approximate line running from east to west. Because of the volume of water entering the trench at this end no further exploration was carried out but it was thought likely that further preserved timber could be encountered at deeper levels.
The pottery (eight fragments of EM-M Canterbury Tyler Hill sandy ware) encountered in the base of the trenches at the limit of mechanical excavation demonstrate that the shore at the fringe of the Stour was open to the deposition of domestic rubbish in the later medieval period, at least until the 13th century AD. The deposits of tile fragments and occasional flints and other building material in the upper deposits of the alluvium represent attempts to reclaim and consolidate this location. (1)
