Full Description

A detached wash house in the grounds of Rose Cottage, Cobham. It represents an an unusual survival of vernacular architecture, including the interior, and was noted during test pitting as part of the Cobham Landscape Detectives Project. The Landscape Detectives archaeologists thought that the Wash House actually pre-dated Rose Cottage (1794) as remains of a much older wall were found in the garden quite close to the Wash-house. The property and grounds were a hive of rural industrial activities during its early life. Some of the garden is full of clinker from the spoils from The Old Forge which is next door. The wash house is visible on the OS 1st edition of 1862-1875.
