Full Description
The curtain wall surrounding the inner bailey of Dover castle is part of the earliest Medieval works at the castle and though they were altered in the 18th and 19th centuries, much of the medieval material and their essential character has been preserved. The northern section of the curtain extends from the King’s Gateway to the corner tower.
Originally the mural towers were open backed, and as illustrated by Bereblock in the 1560s the walls were crenellated, but these were removed when the parapets were reformed. Internally it displays an open section of the rear of the wall, and externally it is featureless with a battered base. The steps inside rise to the level of the wall-walk. The parapet is levelled and there are steps at the east end to a C19th. turret next the corner tower. Over the gate steps on either side lead up to a newly formed firing platform (possibly of a C20th date) and then links to the west parapet. (summarised from sources) (1-3)
